The number of units in which a student enrolls may affect their financial aid. Most federal financial aid requires at least half-time enrollment while institutional aid requires at least full-time enrollment. Students may only receive federal and institutional aid towards units that are required to complete their degree. Please use the following guide for determining a student鈥檚 level of enrollment:

Undergraduate Students:

  • Full-time: At least 12 units
  • Three-quarters-time: At least 9 units, less than 12 units
  • Half-time: At least 6 units, less than 9 units
  • Less-than-half-time: Less than 6 units

Graduate Students

  • Full-time: At least 6 units
  • Three-quarters-time: At least 4.5 units, less than 6 units
  • Half-time: At least 3 units, less than 4.5 units
  • Less-than-half-time: Less than 3 units

Financial Aid awards are calculated based on the number of units enrolled per semester. Pell Grant and Cal Grant awards are based on the number of units enrolled on the University鈥檚 Census date each semester. Changes in enrollment after this date may not result in a change in financial aid awards unless the University is required to return federal funds under the Return to Title IV regulations.

Changes in enrollment prior to the University鈥檚 last day to add/drop a class or the Census date may result in changes to the student鈥檚 financial aid awards and the amount disbursed.

Disbursements for most aid begin:

  • During the first week of the semester, and
  • Disburse once a week thereafter

Disbursements for Pell Grant and Cal Grant begin:

  • Following the University鈥檚 Census Date, and
  • Disburse once a week thereafter.

Federal Work-Study awards are not included in the above disbursement schedules. Students Employees are paid on the 15th and the 30th of each month for all hours worked during the pay period.
